What is a Non-Freezing Cold Injury?
Non-Freezing Cold Injuries, or NFCIs, occur when individuals are exposed to temperatures below 2°C (35.6°F) for extended periods. This exposure causes constriction of small blood vessels, leading to tissue injury and oxygen deprivation. Consequently, the affected areas may exhibit symptoms such as numbness, tingling, redness, raw or blue-grey skin, blisters, and even gangrene in severe cases.
Making Your Non-Freezing Cold Injury Claim
Our mission is to enable our clients to access justice without fear of financial burden.
NFCI happens when parts of the body (most often the hands and feet) are exposed to wet and cold conditions for long periods, without being dried and warmed up. Then on warming, sufferers may experience pain and a yellowish appearance in the affected area, or redness, swelling and significant and lasting pain.
NFCI affects mainly the hands and feet and the signs and symptoms can include: Raynaud’s phenomenon, in which blood vessels in the fingers or toes spasm, causing pain and numbness; skin changes, such as redness, swelling and ulcers; and nerve changes, such as pain and numbness in the affected area. Suffering from an NFCI can be painful and debilitating.

Still have questions?
Why Can’t I Claim Before 1987?
Due to a clause in the Crown Proceedings Act, claims for military hearing loss prior to May 1987 cannot be made. As a result, those who were exposed to excessive noise while serving in the military will not receive any compensation. It is important to note that this policy applies only to cases before May 1987 and those after may still be eligible for compensation.
Will A Claim Affect My Pension?
No, bringing a claim won’t affect your entitlement to a pension under any of the various Armed Forces Pension Schemes.
Will Claiming Impact My Career?
In the event that you recover from your injuries and can return to work, there are very strict rules about discriminating against someone for bringing a legal claim.
Personnel who file a compensation claim after an injury are not looked down upon by the MoD. The Ministry of Defence pays you a settlement, regardless of whether you return to work or not, out of a budget specifically allocated for this purpose. Your unit’s budget doesn’t cover it and it certainly doesn’t come from the same budget that dictates the amount and quality of gear, equipment, and other resources for your friends who remain in service.
